DENNY URBAN UTILITY BIKE

THE ULTIMATE URBAN UTILITY BIKE

In 2014 TEAGUE Design that partnered with local bike maker and artisan, Taylor Seizmore, to create the ultimate urban utility bike. Our goal was to create 'an everyday bike that removes the barriers to becoming an everyday rider'.

We named the bike DENNY in honor of Denny Ave. A steep busy street in the heart of Seattle that sums up all the challenges and opportunities facing a rider in our city. We wanted to create a bike to enable riders to conquer hills, traffic, and weather. But most of all, we wanted to create a compelling alternative for daily drivers to become daily riders.

On DENNY, I stepped outside my typical role as an industrial designer to take on designing and creating the technical systems of the bike including the Arduino actuated lighting (for turn signals and automatic headlights), and Arduino managed automatic transmission (using an 8 speed gear hub with a solenoid gear changer), and by prototyping and inventing a working (now patented) “U-lock” handlebar locking system.
